Tarnished? Gold? I cleaned tape goo from a Maple by soaking in acetone and dabbing with a q-tip. It also worked to remove paint from colored GAEs.

BE CAREFUL WITH ACETONE! SAFETY FIRST!

Hmmm, I diden't know gold tarnished.I do have some sunshine gold rounds with brown spots on them but I figured that was from the airtites they have been in since 1988.

Be careful, 999 is so soft you can easily do far more ascetic damage that you are trying to fix. Plus tarnish in a 9999 coin, 'sup with that? Gold doesn't tarnish. If it were a 22K coin alloyed with copper, like a Krug, I could understand. I had a 50 peso coin with brown spots.

Silver tarnishes but 24-K (Pure) Gold is not supposed to tarnish.

You coulden't be more right on that. I have a 5 gram suisse bar I wear on a chain and I cleaned it and wiped it dry with a soft bath towel. Roops, bad idea the towel scratched it.:banghead:

Gold of that fineness definitely does not tarnish.
Gold does not tarnish but sometimes gold coins alloyed with copper will develop what are called "copper spots."

Do not Brillo your maple.

I grind off all the high relief so that I only have a flat surface remaining. Much easier to polish that way.

There might just be some grease etc. on it. Sometimes fogging it and wiping it with a very soft tissue can help. I have also submerged coins in bleech - which made them more shiny for a while however these were alloys (Sovereigns etc.) anyway. In one particularly bad case I had to use toilet cleaner to remove a spot on an alloy coin.

i sometimes search the web for counterfeit stories of gold coins...i havent seen any reports of fake maple leaf, fake gold eagle, or fake australian coins.

the fakes are mostly krugerrands and sovereigns from what i've seen in gold.

Use the strongest WIRE brush you can find NOT!

It will reduce the value perhaps 50% - but who cares right?

There is nothing to be gained by polishing it. Just leave it alone.
